What to know about JD Vance's Des Moines campaign stop with Zach Nunn

Vice President JD Vance’s campaign visit with U.S. Rep. Zach Nunn next week will spotlight advancements in manufacturing, the Ankeny Republican says.

Vance will join Nunn on Tuesday, May 5, at Ex-Guard Industries, 1700 Dixon St. in Des Moines ahead of a competitive midterm election. The program is slated to start at 2 p.m., and Vance is expected to begin his remarks by 3 p.m.

In a social media post Thursday, April 30, Nunn said he and Vance will talk about “the advancement of manufacturing, the success stories we’ve taken from Iowa to become best practice at our nation’s capital.”

“Iowa is at the center of the fight for our majority,” Nunn previously said in a statement to the Des Moines Register. “Having the vice president on the ground is a testament to the momentum we’re building and our commitment to finishing the job for working families.”

Members of the public are asked to RSVP online. The Republican Party of Iowa’s website, iowagop.org, has a direct link on its homepage.

Nunn is seeking a third term in Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District, which is perpetually among the nation’s most competitive. It is one of 16 U.S. House seats rated as a “toss-up” by nonpartisan elections analysts at the Cook Political Report, and it is one of the top targets for Democrats seeking to flip control of the chamber.

The district encompasses 21 counties and includes the cities of Des Moines, West Des Moines, Ottumwa and Winterset.

Vance was initially set to campaign alongside Nunn on April 30 but the visit was canceled.

Nunn said on social media he was needed in Washington, D.C., to vote on the Farm Bill and would instead host Vance next week.

Later, Vance was to attend a Turning Point USA event on the Iowa State University campus with Erika Kirk, the widow of the group’s co-founder Charlie Kirk.

With the scheduling conflict, a message from Turning Point USA Tours Team said Iowa State could not accommodate a rescheduled date later this semester because of finals week and the end of the semester approaching. The group said it “remains fully committed” to bringing its college tour back to Iowa for the coming fall semester.

Vance’s visit could also help lay a foundation for a 2028 presidential bid as a likely top contender for the White House. Iowa Republicans are expected to once again host their first-in-the-nation presidential caucuses in 2028.

As President Donald Trump’s running mate in 2024, Vance attended a private fundraiser and roundtable in Des Moines. And in 2019, before he ran for office, Vance was the headline speaker at the Greater Des Moines Partnership’s 2019 annual dinner.
