The Iowa City Press-Citizen student of the week poll has returned for another round of voting.
Each week, Johnson County high school principals and faculty are asked to nominate students who excel in and out of the classroom.
The public can vote at press-citizen.com until noon on Thursday, Dec. 4. The winner will be announced on Friday, and an accompanying story will be published in the Press-Citizen.
Students from public and private high schools in Johnson County are eligible.
Iowa City Liberty High School senior Keegan Burke was the Press-Citizen’s most recent student of the week.
Trea Eidahl, Solon High School
Trea Eidahl is a senior at Solon High School who participates in numerous activities while also working diligently on her post-secondary courses to prepare for a nursing career. Eidahl is loud and proud as a supporter in the Spartan student section and exudes school spirit, is an active member of the National Honor Society, and is at the top of her class academically. Eidahl exemplifies what it means to be a kind and considerate student while setting an excellent example for younger Spartans.
Taleen Rahaal, Iowa City West High School
Iowa City West junior Taleen Rahaal is an impactful community leader. Rahaal is the co-founder and current president of the Community Connect Club, a service-oriented organization she created to bring students together through volunteerism, kindness, and community outreach. Her leadership has already inspired many of her peers to get involved and give back, with 80 members now a part of the initiative. Rahaal was recently honored at the Business Professionals of America Fall Leadership Conference Impact Dinner in Des Moines. Rahaal is an executive board member of BPA and a key member of West High’s marketing committee, elevating the chapter and boosting engagement.
“(Rahaal) is a model of initiative, service, creativity, and school spirit. Her commitment to improving both West High and the broader Coralville community makes her an outstanding candidate for Student of the Week,” said West High School principal Mitch Gross.
Luke Rustan, Iowa City Regina Catholic High School
Luke Rustan is a senior at Iowa City Regina Catholic High School and is an active student leader. Rustan is a retreat team leader, community house captain, and member of Regina’s Student Activities Advisory Committee. Rustan is also active in the arts and, upon graduation, will have participated in 10 school productions. Rustan also participates in choir, singing at weekly mass and multiple River Valley Conference Honor Choir concerts, and earning all-state recognition in Group Improv and Radio Broadcast as a member of the speech team at Regina. Rustan also participates in track and field and the National Honor Society, and is dedicated to service through donating blood at Briarwood Skilled Nursing Facility and volunteering at Houses Into Homes.
“(Rustan’s) willingness to step up and help wherever it is needed and to bring humor to everyone’s day is greatly appreciated by the Regina community,” said Regina principal Glenn Plummer.
About Student of the Week
The Press-Citizen’s student of the week poll is a weekly contest throughout the academic year. Polls will open on Mondays and close on Thursdays. Students from public and private high schools in the Iowa City area are eligible.
