Vote for Press-Citizen Athletes of the Week, Feb. 23- March 1

Three Iowa City-area teams qualified for the Iowa high school girls state basketball tournament, which will be held from Monday, March 2 to Saturday, March 7 in Des Moines.

Here are the nominees for the Iowa City Press-Citizen’s high school Athletes of the Week for Feb. 23- March 1. Press-Citizen.com readers vote to decide this week’s winner. Voting closes at 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 5.

Girls

Grace Fincham, Sr., Iowa City West

Fincham helped West basketball earn a state tournament berth with a 61-54 win over Iowa City Liberty in the 5A regional championship on Feb. 24.

She totaled 24 points, eight rebounds and five assists. She also went 4-of-5 from long range.

Tenley Levin, Fr., Solon

Levin put together a solid game in Solon’s 67-47 loss to Central DeWitt in the 4A regional championship on Feb. 24.

She scored a game-high 18 points. She also totaled four rebounds, four blocks and two steals.

Averie Lower, Sr., Clear Creek Amana

Lower was not to be denied in CCA basketball’s 72-56 win over Clinton in the 4A regional championship on Feb. 24.

She scored a game-high 38 points with seven 3-pointers. She also totaled 13 rebounds, four steals and three assists.

Addie McLaughlin, Soph., Iowa City Regina

McLaughlin continued to be a postseason force in Regina basketball’s 47-36 win over Grundy Center in the 2A regional championship on Feb. 25.

She scored a game-high 24 points and secured seven rebounds. She also totaled five assists.

Natalie Ramsey, Sr., Iowa City Liberty

Ramsey put up strong numbers in her final high school game in a 61-54 loss to West in the regional championship.

She led the game with 25 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

Boys

Alex DuBay, Jr., Clear Creek Amana

DuBay was a strong rebounder in CCA basketball’s 62-59 loss to Benton in the first round of 3A substate on Feb. 23.

He recorded 11 rebounds. He also totaled nine points, four blocks and two steals.

Grant Gordon, Jr., Solon

Gordon had a productive game in Solon basketball’s 71-51 win over Assumption in the 3A substate semifinals on Feb. 26.

He scored 18 points with four 3-pointers. He also recorded four rebounds and four assists.

Will Litton, Jr., Iowa City Regina

Litton recorded a double-double in Regina basketball’s 66-41 win over Central Lee in the 2A substate semifinals on Feb. 24.

He totaled 17 points and 10 rebounds. He also tallied two assists and a steal.

Jerimiah Washpun, Jr., Iowa City Liberty

Washpun was a bucket getter in Liberty basketball’s 72-67 win over Indianola in the first round of 4A substate on Feb. 23.

He scored 30 points against the Indians. He also totaled three rebounds, two steals, an assist and a block.

Christopher Watkins, Sr., Iowa City High

Watkins had an excellent game in City High basketball’s 51-45 win over Marshalltown in the first round of 4A substate on Feb. 23.

He led the game with 18 rebounds and scored 14 points.
