Vote: Des Moines Register metro-area male Athlete of the Week for June 15-21

The week of June 15-21 was another productive one for high school baseball players from the Des Moines metro area.

Johnston, the No. 5 team in Class 4A according to the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association, defeated No. 8 Ankeny Centennial by a 6-3 score on June 19 at Ankeny in the game of the week featuring teams from the metro area.

Waukee Northwest, ranked No. 6 in 4A, defeated Southeast Polk, Dowling Catholic, 3A No. 8 Sergeant Bluff-Luton and 3A No. 4 Bishop Heelan. Waukee, ranked No. 7, fell to Dowling Catholic and defeated Ankeny.

There were several outstanding performances from baseball players from the metro area during the week.

Here are the Des Moines Register’s male Athlete of the Week candidates from the Des Moines metro area for the week of May June 15-21. DesMoinesRegister.com readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.

Mason Tell, Johnston

Tell did a great job getting on base for Johnston during its 6-3 victory at Ankeny Centennial on June 19.

Tell went 3-for-3 with a triple for the Dragons. He scored two runs during the game.

Cale Root, Des Moines East

Root had a big night swinging the bat for Des Moines East during a 15-1 victory over Marshalltown as part of a doubleheader on June 19 at Des Moines.

Root connected for three doubles during the game. He scored two runs and drove in three for the Scarlets.

Hayden Mohwinkle, Carlisle

Mohwinkle was overpowering on the mound for the Carlisle baseball team during a 4-3 victory over Harlan in eight innings on June 20 at Carlisle.

Mohwinkle went all eight innings to get the win. He struck out 13 batters and gave up just two earned runs on four hits with two walks.

Asher Brueck, Indianola

Brueck turned in a dominant pitching performance to lead Indianola past Ames in a 1-0 battle at Indianola on June 18.

Brueck fired a seven-hit shutout for the Indians. He finished the game with six strikeouts and no walks.

Brady Andrews, Des Moines Christian

Andrews both drove in and scored seven runs over two games for Des Moines Christian during a 16-6, 21-5 doubleheader sweep over Panorama on June 19 at Panora.

Andrews was 2-for-3 with a home run, four runs and three RBIs during the 16-6 victory. He went 3-for-4 with a triple, three runs and four RBIs during the 21-5 Lion triumph.
