Sweet Adelines celebrate 50th convention in Cedar Rapids | Music Column

The Sweet Adelines Region 5 marked a major milestone as singers from across the Midwest gathered April 23-25 in Cedar Rapids for the region’s 50th annual convention and competition. The weekend blended musical excellence, community spirit, and a warm welcome from the host city.

Cedar Rapids embraced the event with enthusiasm. Visitors arriving downtown were greeted by celebratory street signs along First Avenue, proudly recognizing the Sweet Adelines’ 50th anniversary. The Paramount Theatre also joined the festivities by setting up a dedicated photo area, giving quartets and choruses a perfect backdrop to capture memories.

Among the standout performers was our local Metro Mix Chorus, representing our community with energy, artistry, and heart. Their performance earned them an impressive second-place finish, a testament to their dedication and musical excellence.

The 50th convention wasn’t just a competition — it was a celebration of decades of harmony, friendship, and the shared joy of barbershop music. From rehearsals and workshops to performances and reunions, the event highlighted the strength and spirit of Region 5’s musical community.

In our local chorus of Metro Mix, Donna Johnson and Janet Walker were recognized for their 50-year membership in the Sweet Adelines organization. Congratulations ladies, this is an impressive achievement.

As the Sweet Adelines look ahead to the next 50 years, Cedar Rapids can proudly say it played host to a landmark moment in the region’s history — and our local Metro Mix chorus can celebrate a well‑earned place near the top of the podium.

Keep watching for Metro Mix performing around the area this spring and summer. We will update you as to where we will be performing on our website (https://www.metromixchorus.org/) or Facebook page https://facebook.com/metromixchorusIowa.

If you are interested in singing, please join us from 7-9:30 p.m. on Thursdays at Shueyville Church. We welcome visitors as well as people interested in becoming a part of this chorus.

Ellen Hanson joined Sweet Adelines International in 2009. She sings in Metro Mix Chorus and lives in Cedar Rapids.
