Score deals and summer fun at these 4 Iowa City weekend events

Whethere in the mood to score a deal, share a laugh with friends or spend time with family, Iowa City is the place to be this weekend with plenty of summer fun.

Here are five events to check out in the Iowa City corridor:

Shop till you drop at Iowa City’s annual Sidewalk Sales

Thursday to Sunday: The word on the street in downtown Iowa City this weekend is sales, with The Iowa City Downtown District’s annual Sidewalk Sales returning from Thursday, July 16, to Sunday, July 19. The Sidewalk Sales are downtown Iowa City’s biggest annual retail event and one of the city’s longest-running traditions. More than 20 storefronts participate in an effort to clear out their inventories, while delivering massive deals to shoppers.

Catch a case of Saturday funnies with Lady Franklyn  

Saturday: Lady Franklyn is Willow Creek Theatre Company’s House improv team, performing most Saturdays. The professional improv troupe will host a show at 6:30 p.m., on Saturday, July 18, promising an evening of laughter and spontaneity. Tickets are available online for $12.50.

Take in movie magic at the Iowa City Municipal Airport

Saturday: Summer of the Arts’ Drive-In Movies at the Hangar at the Iowa City Municipal Airport returns for another weekend. A showing of the cult classic “Galaxy Quest,” will follow washed-up stars of a cult space TV show as they are mistaken for real superheroes by an alien race in desperate need of help. The screening will begin 30 minutes after sundown, around 9 p.m., on Saturday, July 19.

Dig into history with the Johnson County Master Gardeners

Sunday: Organizations across the greater Iowa City corridor are celebrating 250 years of American history all year long, including Johnson County Master Gardeners of Iowa. From 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 19, join the organization at the Plum Grove Historic Home for an afternoon of garden tours, family-friendly activities, and sweet treats. The event is free and open to the public.
