One person shot and hospitalized, two assaulted at Fourth of July party in Des Moines

Just before 12:30 A.M. on July 5, Des Moines Police Department officers responded to a report of a large fight and multiple gunshots at the 2000 block of Meadow Chase Lane, according to a news release from DMPD.

Upon arrival, officers found an estimated crowd of more than 50 people, many of whom were actively fighting. It was, police said, a “chaotic scene.”

A 41-year-old male had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and taken to UnityPoint-Methodist Medical Center by Des Moines Fire Department medics, according to the release. He remained hospitalized Saturday morning.

A 40-year-old female and a 39-year-old female were also assaulted during the fight and were treated for minor injuries.

Four adults — a 19-year-old, a 20-year-old and two 37-year-olds — were arrested at the scene and charged with disorderly conduct.  A 16-year-old was also charged with disorderly conduct.

Evidence suggests that two guns were fired during the fight, police said. Officers recovered one handgun at the scene.

Witness told police the shooting suspect fled the scene before officers arrived.

DMPD’s Crimes Against Persons Section detectives were investigating the incident. No arrests had been made by Saturday at noon.
