A motorcyclist died following a crash on Wednesday, May 13, in Des Moines’ Waveland Park neighborhood.
Des Moines police and firefighters responded to a crash with injury around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday with reports of a motorcycle and car collision, according to a news release from police spokesperson Sgt. Paul Parizek. The motorcycle was on fire, and a local business owner used a fire extinguisher to put it out.
Life-saving measures were taken on the scene, and the motorcyclist, a 41-year-old man who remains unnamed, was transferred to the UnityPoint Methodist Medical Center, where he later died. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, Parizek said.
A preliminary investigation indicates the crash occurred when a 16-year-old driver in a 2013 Dodge Avenger attempted to turn into a parking lot from westbound University Avenue, according to Parizek. The motorcyclist, riding a 2011 Harley Davidson, collided with the car as the driver turned.
Police continue to investigate the crash.
