Noah Kohut-Jackson still has that track and field turnover.
The Ames and University of Minnesota graduate claimed fourth place in the men’s elite field of the Macklind Mile in St. Louis on Saturday, June 27. Kohut-Jackson, 24, ran 4 minutes and 2 seconds to place fourth overall.
The 24-year-old man, who lists Cambridge, Iowa, as his residence, leads off this edition of the WEEKEND UPDATE of the best performances by Iowa-based collegiate and post collegiate distance runners and triathletes.
Kohut-Jackson finished his Gophers career in May of 2025 and ran 49:12 at the TC 10 Mile as part of the Twin Cities Marathon last October. He narrowly missed becoming yet another native Iowan to earn the distinction of breaking 4 minutes for the mile. He finished :05 behind Macklind winner and former Bradley University standout Jack Crull, 24.
In the men’s competitive division, Jack Hostettler, 35, of Des Moines finished seventh overall. The former Saint Louis University runner ran 4:20 in a race won in 4:14.
Moving to the track briefly, where former Missouri Valley Conference champion Adam Fogg finished third at the Meeting International Troyes Aube in France on Sunday, June 28. The former Drake University athlete, now with the UA Mission Run Baltimore Distance squad, clocked 3:34.82 for the 1,500 meters. That time is just .82 of a second off the best by the 27-year-old British runner. Ignacio Fontes of Spain won in 3:33.42.
Moving back to Iowa and the Sturgis Falls races in Cedar Falls on June 27. Former Iowa City resident Jay Welp took the victory in the 10K in 31:41, a 5:06 pace per mile. Welp, 34, still owns the Runablaze Iowa team record of 14:19 from 2020 and now resides in Springfield, Illinois. Cedar Falls senior-to-be Dominic Williams, 17, took second in 32:57. His teammate Kyler Blanchard, another 17-year-old Cedar Falls senior-to-be, was third in 35:23.
In the 5K, Cedar Falls and Wartburg College grad Michael Goodenbour picked up the victory in 15:54. Goodenbour, 23, now runs for the Driftless Distance Project based in Wisconsin and lives in Waverly. He won by 1:17. Fitness Sports Distance Project member Addy Carlson, another former Wartburg runner based in Waverly, won the women’s title and was 16th overall in 19:53. Carlson, 24, prepped at St. Ansgar.
The FSDP team had a strong showing at the Coralville 4th Fest 5K on June 27. Seth Cheney, 21, captured the victory in 15:47. Cheney ran for Iowa City West and Iowa Central Community College before joining the Iowa State Run Club in the fall of 2025. He topped Jack Kosaian, 31, of Coralville by 24 seconds. FSDP’s Joshua Wiseman, 24, of Iowa City rounded out the men’s podium in 16:44. Finishing fourth overall and taking the women’s title was FSDP’s Gabby Skopec, 27. The ex-Iowa City West and University of Iowa athlete ran 18:21.
Shifting to southwest Iowa and the Greater Creston 6 Mile on June 27, where Runablaze Iowa’s Tyler Lance of Algona took the win in 34:01. Nate Hopp of the Running Wild Elite squad was runner-up and the top masters (40 and over) athlete in 34:52. Hopp resides in Cedar Falls. Mediapolis product and Wartburg junior-to-be Logan Rosas was next to finish in 35:39. Taking fourth place and securing the women’s title was former Newton and Drake runner Casey McDermott. The Crown Running member ran 38:03.
Runablaze’s Angela Chaney set a new postcollegiate personal record in a winning effort at the Hairy Nation 5K in Bloomfield on June 27. The Norwalk and Central College grad, 38, from rural Drakesville ran 18:03.72 to top all of the women. Wualfret Morales, 20, of Ottumwa was the overall winner in 17:04.05.
Moving west to the Glacier National Park Half Marathon in Browning, Montana, on June 27. Two Runablaze athletes finished second and third in the women’s competition that featured 1,200 feet of climbing over the first five miles and running at altitude. Amanda Edwards was second in 1:34:41. Elaina Biechler was :07 back in 1:34:48. Edwards competed for Dubuque Hempstead and Wartburg. Biechler is an ex-Coe College standout. Both are based in Dubuque.
The next day at the Missoula Marathon that featured a gradual incline for much of the 26.2-mile distance, FSDP’s Daniel Jensen placed 11th overall. Jensen, 34, of Grimes ran 2:43:00. Nate Wellington, 30, of Helena, Montana, was the champion in 2:32:46.
Moving to triathlon, where Runablaze men’s team leader Tyson Wieland won for the fourth time in five tries at the Ames Triathlon on June 28. The former Johnston and Iowa Central competitor finished in 1:06:52 in the sprint event after covering the 750-meter swim in 10:16, the 15.5-mile bike in 37:49 and the 5K run in 16:50. Wieland won by nearly five minutes over fellow Iowan Zackary Johnson.
In the duathlon featuring a 15.5-mile bike and a 5K run to finish, former Benton Community and Central College runner Eli Miller took the victory in 1:16:36. He edged Darin Williams, 40, by 23.8 seconds.
Former Center Point-Urbana and Clarke University athlete Kevin Ockenfels won the Sleepy Hollow Iowa Trail Run Series 5 mile event on June 27. Ockenfels finished in 30:28.4 to win by 2:12.
Caleb Sorensen of Corning was the overall winner of the 2.5-mile event. Sorensen ran 14:46.1, a 5:54 pace per mile, to win by over 51 seconds.
GOING BACK: Two former Iowa State standouts competed at the BAA 10K in Boston on June 21. Ryan Ford, a 28-year-old All-American for the Cyclones who is now an On athlete based in Boulder, Colorado, ran the 6.2-mile distance in 28:57 for 13th place. Two-time steeplechase Olympian Hillary Bor, now with the U.S. Army team, was next to finish in 29:00. Bor, 36, also was an All-American for Iowa State. The winner was Patrick Kiprop of Kenya in 27:55.
Former Drake University runner Brooke Mullins, who finished her career at Florida State, ended up 30th in the women’s professional field. Mullins ran 33:44. She runs for the B.A.A. team. The winner was Kenya’s Sharon Lokedi in 31:28.
