Iowa women’s basketball legend inks WNBA free agency deal

After winning her first WNBA championship with the Las Vegas Aces, Iowa women’s basketball legend Megan Gustafson has agreed to a two-year free agency deal with the newly-formed Portland Fire.

Gustafson played the past two seasons with Las Vegas after the 2019 No. 17 overall pick by Dallas made additional stops in Washington and in Phoenix across her first five professional seasons.

Despite missing the first half of the 2025 season with a leg injury, Gustafson provided impactful minutes at the center position off the bench behind back-to-back league MVP A’Ja Wilson.

In her 20 regular-season games played last season, Gustafson averaged 3.0 points and 1.8 rebounds per game on 35.1% shooting in just a little more than 11 minutes per night on average. Additionally, Gustafson averaged 2.2 points and 1.3 rebounds per game on 44.4% shooting in her 10 postseason games en route to a WNBA title.

Gustafson is one of three former Iowa women’s basketball players to have their number retired and hung in the rafters of Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Gustafson’s No. 10 is hung alongside Michelle Edwards’ No. 30 and Caitlin Clark’s No. 22.

Per ESPN WNBA insider Alexa Philippou, Gustafson’s contract is protected and worth $1.025 million. As for the first year of the contract, the Fire will pay her $500,000, and $525,000 in the second year.

While her exact fit on the depth chart remains undetermined as the franchise continues to assemble its inaugural roster, she will bring championship pedigree and fierce competitiveness to the Fire.
