AMES ― The Iowa State men’s basketball coaching staff is now complete.
T.J. Otzelberger and the Cyclones filled the last remaining assistant coach vacancy by naming Allan Hanson as the newest member of the staff. The program announced his hiring on Friday, April 24. He will begin his duties at Iowa State immediately.
Otzelberger replenished his staff after key assistants Kyle Green (Northern Iowa) and J.R. Blount (San Diego) left for head coaching roles elsewhere. Iowa State hired former Cincinnati assistant Tim Buckley earlier on April 6 and now Hanson joins the staff.
Hanson arrives at Ames after serving as an assistant coach for one season at Bradley. Before that, he spent two years on staff at Southern Utah. He also had an assistant coaching stint at Western Illinois.
“Allan Hanson will be an incredible resource for the young men in our program,” Otzelberger said in a statement. “He’s a competitor, proven winner and someone who takes tremendous pride in student-athletes realizing their potential. We look forward to him impacting our pressure defensive system as well as working with our point guards.”
A native of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, Hanson helped Bradley go 21-13 last season, which included a second-place finish in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Braves secured a spot in the NIT.
He also worked closely with point guard Jaquan Johnson, who was a standout for Bradley before transferring and committing to Iowa State on April 11.
At Southern Utah, he spent two seasons with the Thunderbirds, helping develop two all-conference players.
Prior to that, he made his Division I coaching debut as an assistant coach at Western Illinois for the 2022-23 season, where he served under Rob Jeter. He followed Jeter to Southern Utah.
“I am extremely excited to join T.J. Otzelberger’s staff at Iowa State,” Hanson said in a statement. “I look forward to helping continue to build the success the program has had, both on and off the court. I am grateful for this opportunity.”
Hanson was a successful high school basketball coach. He compiled a 117-39 record from 2016-22 at Nicolet High School in Glendale, Wisconsin. Nicolet won a state title on his watch in 2019.
He played Division I college basketball at Milwaukee, appearing in 114 games with 57 starts for the Panthers from 2004-08. He was a part of the 2005 team that reached the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history, and then helped the Panthers repeat as Horizon League champions and return to the NCAA Tournament the following year in 2006.
