The annual men’s basketball Cy-Hawk game is always a great measuring stick for Iowa.
The Cyclones have been a premier Big 12 program for well over a decade now. TJ Otzelberger’s team has had Iowa’s number in recent years, winning the last three games in the series. With Ben McCollum now in charge, there’s a lot of optimism that the Hawkeyes can swing that Cy-Hawk momentum back in their favor. The upcoming edition of this classic rivalry had its dynamic shifted by a new injury update.
On Friday, Iowa State got hit with some bad news that could be a huge factor in the result of this year’s Cy-Hawk matchup. Starting guard Killyan Toure will be out until January after undergoing shoulder surgery.
Toure is a 6-foot-3 second-year guard from Pamiers, France. Last season, he started 37 games for the Cyclones in the backcourt.
The young Frenchman averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. Toure made his mark on the defensive end of the court, blossoming into one of the best defensive guards in college basketball. With Tamin Lipsey off to the NBA, the Cyclones will bring a new starting backcourt into Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Iowa and Iowa State will square off on Thursday, Dec. 10, in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes are 31-8 all-time against the Cyclones at home.
