Pro Day is an important day for guys looking to boost and raise their NFL draft stock.
It’s an opportunity for them to show what they can do in a controlled, familiar environment surrounded by teammates and coaches who are there to support them. Plenty of current NFL stars leaped up draft boards following strong performances at their Pro Day. And it looks like that may be happening for an Iowa wide receiver.
The Hawkeyes hosted their Pro Day earlier this week, where all 32 NFL teams had someone in attendance to check out a bevy of talented prospects. While a lot of the usual names caught the headlines, there was one big winner that no one’s talked about as an NFL prospect all offseason: wide receiver Jacob Gill.
According to Aaron Wilson, who covers the NFL and the Houston Texans for KPRC 2 News in Houston, Gill caught the attention of numerous NFL teams after a strong Pro Day.
Wilson mentioned that the Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers, and Denver Broncos all expressed some interest in Gill following the Pro Day, while the rest of the league was impressed with what he did. Gill completed the L-Cone Drill in 6.68 seconds, which Wilson said would’ve been the best time of any player at the NFL’s Scouting Combine last month.
Gill transferred to Iowa before the 2024 season after spending three years at Northwestern. The 6-foot, 185-pound receiver led the Hawkeyes in receptions and yards in 2024, and finished second to DJ Vonnahme in both categories last season. Across his two seasons in Iowa City, Gill compiled 59 catches for 689 yards and three touchdowns, playing in offenses that struggled to find a consistent passing game.
While the overall career numbers aren’t gaudy by any stretch, when Gill got targets, he made plays. He was shifty, picked up yards after the catch, and wasn’t afraid to put his body on the line to go up and make a grab. Those are the traits that NFL scouts look at more than the stats. Gill’s tape shows flashes of a solid NFL contributor, and his recent Pro Day performance might allow him to be just that.
