Iowa football vs. Indiana: Final score, recap, highlights

After opening Big Ten play with a 38-28 road victory at Rutgers, Iowa returned home and welcomed in No. 12 Indiana.

Though the Hawkeyes certainly had opportunities to end their winless streak against ranked opponents, Iowa (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten) dropped its first league contest of 2025 with a 20-15 setback against Indiana (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten).

Iowa jumped in front 10-7 with a 3-yard touchdown run from quarterback Mark Gronowski with just 22 seconds left before halftime. But, Indiana quickly orchestrated a drive to set up a 46-yard Nico Radicic field goal to tie the game going into the halftime break.

From there, the teams traded field goals before a late Drew Stevens field goal miss set up the game-winning touchdown. Iowa defensive back Zach Lutmer had set the Hawkeyes up in prime position to win the game, but, operating with backup quarterback Hank Brown following an injury to starter Mark Gronowski, Iowa couldn’t get closer than a 42-yard try.

Stevens’ 42-yard field goal try was wide left. Then, Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza connected with Elijah Sarratt for a 49-yard, game-winning touchdown.

Iowa finished with 284 yards of offense, including 192 passing yards. Indiana ended with 337 yards of total offense.

Mendoza completed 13-of-23 passes for 233 yards and a pair of touchdowns against one interception. Before exiting with his injury, Gronowski completed 19-of-25 passes for 144 yards and an interception.

Iowa has an open week before it travels to Wisconsin (2-2, 0-1 Big Ten) for a rivalry date at Camp Randall Stadium on Oct. 11.
