After starting the year with a full, healthy stable of running backs, the Iowa Hawkeyes have seen that position catch the injury bug as of late.
Starter Kamari Moulton is back in the fold and appeared healthy against Rutgers, which is a good sign. In his return, Iowa lost another back, though.
Jaziun Patterson, the Hawkeyes’ leading rusher, will be out against the Indiana Hoosiers, which gives Iowa another test of their running back depth. Head coach Kirk Ferentz discussed the Hawkeyes’ plan and who to expect to see on Saturday.
“The few, the proud, the free. Whoever is healthy is in there. We have Kamari back. He looked really good the other night, and he’s doing great. T.J. certainly is ready to roll, and then Nathan would be the next guy up. That’s pretty much where we’re at right now. We’ll play with the guys we have,” Ferentz said about Iowa’s running back room.
Moulton has run for 90 yards on 17 carries this season, a strong average of 5.3 yards per carry, behind the highest-graded offensive line unit in college football. Xavier Williams has tallied 186 yards, while Terrell Washington Jr. has rumbled for 95 yards. Freshman Nathan McNeil has totaled 80 yards on 14 carries and could see extended work on Saturday.
Ferentz was also asked about the availability of Brevin Doll, who will be back this week, but in a small capacity, unlikely to see action ahead of other backs.
“He will be available for depth, but he just started practicing yesterday. He’s missed a lot of time,” Ferentz said about Doll.
Brevin Doll, the redshirt freshman, appeared in the victory over UMass, running for three yards on two attempts.
