The National Weather Service in Des Moines warns that more severe weather is likely across Iowa on Monday, May 18.
Storms in Iowa over the weekend brought heavy rain to some areas, hail up to 2 inches in diameter and a possible tornado in southwest Iowa. Since Friday, May 15, some areas of the state have received more than 2 inches of rain as of the morning of May 18.
Here’s a look at the latest National Weather Service severe weather outlook.
What is the severe weather outlook in Iowa for the next 24 hours?
An enhanced or Level 3 (out of 5) risk is in place for southwestern Iowa, including Council Bluffs, stretching to Des Moines and extending to Iowa City and Waterloo in eastern Iowa. Storms are expected to start in western Iowa around 5 p.m. and reach eastern Iowa by 9-10 p.m.
Storms will move quickly — around 45 mph — with hail up to 2.75 inches and wind gusts of 75 mph posing the primary threats. Tornadoes are possible across Iowa, with a 10%–14% chance in central Iowa, including the Des Moines metro, and a higher 15%–29% risk in far southwestern Iowa near Red Oak.
The NWS has not specified how strong any potential tornadoes could become.
Rainfall buildup could lead to flooding in parts of Iowa
NWS forecasters say scattered flash flooding is possible, especially in cities and low-lying areas where ponding may occur. The risk is highest in locations that have already seen significant recent rainfall.
What is the forecast in Des Moines for Monday?
Showers and thunderstorms are possible in Des Moines on Monday evening, mainly after 5 p.m., with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 82 degrees. Storms are expected to continue into early Tuesday, with a low around 54 degrees.
