An 18-year-old Iowa City resident has been sentenced for his role in a targeted shooting.
Moayed Elsid, of Iowa City, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting an Iowa City woman in the stomach around 3:30 a.m. on Aug. 3, 2025.
Elsid was found guilty of assault by a jury trial on April 3. His co-defendant, Nathaniel Washington, has yet to go to trial for his alleged role in the 2025 shooting. Elsid was originally charged with attempted murder, but the jury reduced the charge to assault.
Johnson County Judge Ian Thornhill ruled that Elsid violated his parole for a pair of guilty charges for burglary and willful injury tied to a 2024 stabbing at Iowa City West High School. The victim was the son of the woman Elsid shot in August 2025.
Thornhill, during Monday, June 1’s sentencing, revoked Elsid’s probation for the pair of 2024 charges and sentenced him to consecutive five-year terms.
Thornhill also sentenced Elsid to 30 days in jail for shooting the Iowa City woman, with credit for time served.
In total, Elsid could serve up to 10 years in prison, with credit for nearly 300 days he had already served before sentencing.
“The state believes that the only way to protect the community from the defendant, is through incarceration,” assistant county attorney Jude Pannell said during the sentencing hearing.
Police responded to shots fired in August 2025
Around 3 a.m. on Aug. 3, Iowa City Police responded to the 600 block of Court Street to reports of shots fired and found one person with a gunshot wound to their stomach. They were taken to the hospital for emergency surgery, police said.
According to court records, three other people were treated for gunshot wounds at area hospitals.
Witness testimony, according to court records, identified Elsid and Washington as the shooters. Witness told police that the pair had a verbal altercation with the victim, according to the original criminal complaint, and were seen brandishing firearms.
Police said that cell phone data and witnesses — including the victim — placed Elsid and Washington at the shooting. Police also note that a photo taken hours before the shooting depicts Elsid with the firearm.
Victim targeted by Elsid, Washington, police say
The ICPD claimed that Elsid and Washington targeted the victim because of an “ongoing dispute” between the two and the victim’s son, who was stabbed twice in 2024.
Elsid and Washington are felons and were prohibited from possessing firearms at the time of the shooting.
Washington’s jury trial is scheduled for July 21.
