The first day of spring is more than a month away, but it’s never too soon to think about the warmer days ahead.
The National Weather Service released its long-term forecast for February, March and April, while two similarly named publications, the Farmers’ Almanac and the Old Farmer’s Almanac, published their own predictions for the upcoming spring season.
Here’s what they say to expect as spring arrives in Nebraska.
Will it be a warm spring in Nebraska?
The forecast from the National Weather Service predicts that Nebraska has an equal chance of above- or below-normal temperatures in February, March and April.
The outlook across much of the upper Midwest, including northern South Dakota and North Dakota, predicts below-normal temperatures in the spring.
How rainy will it be this spring in Nebraska?
The National Weather Service says Nebraska also has an equal chance of above- or below-normal precipitation in February, March and April. The forecast is the same for nearly all of South Dakota and western Iowa.
What does the Farmers’ Almanac forecast for spring in Nebraska?
The Farmers’ Almanac calls for “chilly, unsettled” spring weather across the upper Midwest, with cold temperatures expected to linger from late March through mid-April.
“Spring storms are expected to be frequent and active, bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms and even occasional snow, especially in the Northwest and North Central regions,” the almanac says.
The forecast also predicts cooler-than-average temperatures in the northern and central United States, with “fluctuating warm and cold spells.”
A late-season snowfall is also possible in the Northern Plains, the almanac says.
What does the Old Farmer’s Almanac predict for spring in Nebraska?
The Old Farmer’s Almanac forecasts warmer-than-normal temperatures and below-normal precipitation for most of Nebraska.
“In Iowa, Missouri and eastern Kansas and Nebraska, expect a warm spring,” the almanac says. “Rainfall will be below normal in the north and above normal in the south.”
