While spring activities begin to wind down, summer sports practices began Monday, starting one of the busiest stretches of the sports calendar. (Events covered: April 29-May 6)
Boys Track
The Mustangs finished their regular season on May 1 with their best team performance since the first week of April, placing second at the Bondurant-Farrar Invite. Notably, DCG found a chunk of points in the field events as Elijah Gaie and Wyatt Valenta posted new highs.
At 21-foot-11, Gaie marked the best long jump of the night and now sits on pace for a state qualifying bid in two weeks. Valenta’s second-place throw of 156-05 also improved his overall standing, ranked 20th in the class.
Girls Track
After hosting Thursday’s conference coed meet, the Mustangs have one more meet Friday to mark more benchmarks before running at the May 15 state qualifying meet at Waukee Northwest.
Boys Soccer (10-2-2)
One week remains in the Mustangs’ regular season, but DCG has already clinched the Little Hawkeye Conference title.
Not only did Monday’s 5-0 win over Pella on senior night give the team its third straight win (all by shutout), it made it mathematically impossible for Norwalk to claim a share of the league crown. The Warriors tied the Mustangs in the second week of the season but hold a 2-0-2 record while the Mustangs have gone 4-0 in the Little Hawkeye since then. Even a loss in the regular season finale to Oskaloosa would keep the Mustangs in first place.
And with that, the Mustangs are now holding onto the top spot in the latest Class 3A rankings, keeping their target on their back, trying to defend their state championship.
Girls Soccer (6-4-1)
The Friday-Saturday invite hosted by DCG and Urbandale netted the Mustangs a 1-1 record, beating Spencer 6-0 but falling 2-0 to Waverly-Shell Rock.
The latter has become quite the rivalry in recent years, with championships decided between the two. And this season looks no different, as the undefeated Go-Hawks came into Saturday tagged as the top-ranked team, while the Mustangs were ranked No. 2 — presumably holding their spots after the game.
Girls Golf
Just a couple of days after placing sixth with a 411 team score, the Mustangs placed sixth again at the Linda Bloom Invitational in Marshalltown against a similar slate of teams — this time shooting 384, the team’s second-lowest score of the season.
Boys Tennis
The Mustangs added another marker for their growth this season after a 6-5 loss to Indianola on Monday. Since beginning the program two years ago, the closest matchup was an 8-3 loss to the Indians.
DCG gained the most ground in the singles matches, with wins from Ky Wilekns, Griffin Kleis and Louis Mbaya.
Girls Tennis
After a string of tough outings throughout April, the Mustangs’ last three matchups marked the program’s best scoring streak. While still searching for their first team win, a 7-4 loss to Indianola and an 8-3 loss to Oskaloosa this past week gave the team three straight meets with multiple individual wins. That’s the best collective streak since the program started in 2023.
