CHICAGO — Despite the fact that the Cy-Hawk football rivalry is approaching the end of its current deal, there are plans to extend the series, Iowa athletics director Beth Goetz said July 28.
The current contract runs through 2027, but Goetz expects the Iowa vs. Iowa State series to continue beyond that.
“We don’t have any intention not to move forward with that,” Goetz said at Big Ten Media Days on July 28. “(Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard) and I have talked several times this summer. We were both juggling the changes to the Week Zero format and were looking at games we already had on the schedule and things like that. I would expect you’ll see that soon. We’ve talked through dates and will be ready to move forward.”
The Hawkeyes have lost the last two matchups but have a chance to defeat their in-state rival at Kinnick Stadium this year. After Matt Campbell’s departure for Penn State, Iowa State will be in its first season under new head coach Jimmy Rogers.
“That game has been incredibly important to our fans and to the entire state,” Goetz said. “And there could come a day where conference schedules and those types of things make it a little more difficult to play. But I think until then, we’ll continue to work through making sure that game’s on our calendar.”
