State officials have recovered the body of a Creston man who disappeared while fishing in Union County.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources announced Thursday, June 19, that it had found the remains of the missing angler, identified as Ryan Woolsey, 41, of Creston. Woolsey reportedly had planned to go night fishing on Three Mile Lake on Monday, June 16, and had not been heard from since.
The DNR was first notified about the missing person at 3 a.m. Wednesday. In initial searches, DNR officers found a vehicle near a boat ramp and an overturned boat on the lake. Officers continued searching, including employing drones, and ultimately a dive team utilizing sonar located the body.
The DNR notes that severe weather moved through the area Monday, which may have contributed to the incident.
In addition to the DNR, the search and recovery effort included the Union County Sheriff’s Office, Southwest Iowa Dive Team, and the Afton and Creston police departments.
