Class 4A Iowa state softball tournament, Day 2 scores and recap

FORT DODGE — On the second day of the Iowa high school softball state tournament, there was still plenty of action on the schedule.

In their first elimination game of the tournament, the Grayhounds took down Winterset and advanced to take on Western Dubuque. The Huskies were eliminated from the tournament with their second loss in as many days.

Despite entering the tournament as the top seed, the Tigers faced a tough second opponent in Western Dubuque, which beat ADM in the regular season. If anything, though, that gave the Tigers more of a reason to not let history repeat itself.

The Bobcats got on the board first, but the Tigers took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first off hits from Kinzie Maxwell and Finley Schaul. Western Dubuque evened the score and then took the lead in the top of the third, and ADM tied it at three apiece in the bottom of the same inning.

Western Dubuque took a two-run lead in the top of the fifth inning, and that advantage held well into the seventh inning. But a base hit from Maxwell cut the Bobcats’ lead to one, and Addison Siedelmann’s bunt allowed an ADM runner to get home and tie the game. And then – with two runners on base – Ellis Smith drilled a hit up the middle, allowing the Tigers to pick up the game-winner in walk-off fashion.

“Right from the get-go, when she fouled that one off, she knew she had the confidence in there,” said ADM head coach Lindsay Stanford. “She’s been in those tough situations and, being a senior, she’s been here and she’s kind of done that. She knows these high-pressure situations, and so no doubt in the world she was going to put the ball in play.”
