Chipotle considers second Des Moines store. Where could it go:

The city of Des Moines could get its second Chipotle Mexican Grill, as the burrito chain explores Ingersoll Avenue for a new location.

A pre-application meeting was requested to review a parking lot at 1821 Ingersoll Ave. that now is home to and owned by Tri-City Electric Co.

Sitting on slightly more than an acre, the 6,930-square-foot contracting office uses a fraction of the land, according to the Polk County Assessor’s Office.

Tri-City Electric president John Irving told the Register the company met with Chipotle representative several times roughly a month ago to talk about the site, but it was all speculative. Tri-City has no intention of moving from its Ingersoll location, Irving said.

The pre-application meeting allows the city staff to talk with Chipotle officials about the proposal to inform the rest of the permitting and design process. No leases or contracts have been signed between the two companies, Irving said, adding that the chain was considering alternative locations.

A spokesperson from Chipotle told the Register it could not confirm the location but the chain is exploring opportunities to expand in Des Moines.

Ingersoll Avenue already has two burrito chains west of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway including QDOBA Mexican Eats and Iowa City-based Pancheros.

Where else are Chipotles in Des Moines?

Chipotle has expanded its footprint across the metro in the last two years, operating seven store.

Clive saw a new location open on University Avenue after closing its Valley West Mall shop in 2025. Around the same time, another Chipotle opened with a drive-through in Grimes.

Waukee saw its first Chipotle Mexican Grill in 2023.

The sole Chipotle within the Des Moines city limits is at 3737 Merle Hay Road.
