Ballard girls track and field athlete Brooklyn Shoen and Nevada boys tennis player Connery Varsa were voted the Ames Tribune’s female and male Athlete of the Week winners for the week of May 3-9.
Shoen won female athlete of the week with 63% of the vote.
She anchored Ballard to a school-record time in the 4x400relay at the Raccoon River Conference track and field meet on May 6.
Shoen helped the Bombers break the school mark in the 4×400 by winning a conference title in the event with a 4:06.54 showing. She also placed fifth in the 400 hurdles individually with a 4:05.64 time.
Varsa earned male Athlete of the Week honors with 43% of the vote.
He helped the Nevada tennis team roll to its third consecutive North Central Conference title on May 5 at Webster City.
Varsa placed first in the No. 1 singles competition. He defeated Webster City’s Nathan Wardell and Iowa Falls-Alden’s Carter Zollar in straight sets, scoring a pair of 6-0 shutouts in each match.
