A Des Moines-area bridge that partially collapsed July 17 when struck by a truck that exceeded the span’s clearance has again been hit in a similar accident.
But the railroad bridge, owned and operated by Union Pacific, did not collapse in the Tuesday, July 28, collision.
The railroad bridge over NW Second Street a few blocks north of the Des Moines city limits at the Bridgestone-Firestone agricultural tire plant fell after a northbound vacuum/pumper truck from Midwest Vac Professionals hit it, exceeding the bridge’s 13 foot 4 inch clearance The road remained closed both ways for repairs until July 22.
The road was closed both ways again on Tuesday after a southbound truck hit the bridge, Polk County sheriff’s spokesperson Lt. Shane Grego told the Des Moines Register.
Grego said there were no injuries. The roadway reopened at 2 p.m., according to 511IA.
