VOTE Herald-Times Athlete of the Week for May 11-16 presented by IU Health

Welcome to the Herald-Times Athlete of the Week poll for May 11-16, presented by IU Health.

Congratulations to last week’s winner, Bloomington South track athlete Violet Hall, who received 64.5% of the vote (4,242) to top Owen Valley track athlete Payton Lukowski (19.5%).

Readers can vote as much as they like in our latest poll until it closes on Thursday, May 21, at noon. Here are this week’s nominees:

Khaliq Akou, South boys track

Had one chance to meet the Three-Participant standard in the 200 dash in the season’s last race after suffering an injury and came through with a 22.08.

Luke Arnett, South baseball

Senior first baseman helped the Panthers go 2-1 last week. Doubled in a 3-0 loss to Tennessee recruit Gannon Grant and No. 1 Center Grove. Went 1-for-2 with an RBI and turned a double play in a 3-2 win at Columbus North that secured a share of the Conference Indiana title. Then went 3-for-3 with a triple, two walks, three RBIs and two runs scored with three of South’s 16 stolen bases in a 13-4 win over Martinsville.

Ellie Barada, South girls track

Finished her last regular season with the Panthers with a big bang, smashing her school record in the 1,600 with a 4:43.93, topping her 4:49.38 from last year. She also anchored the 4×400 relay to a season best 3:59.18 to win that event.

Madi Bland, Edgewood softball

Helped the Mustangs go 5-1 on the week, going 13-of-22 with two doubles, three home runs, nine RBIs, two stolen bases and 13 runs scored. She has not struck out in her last nine games.

Juniper Crane, Eastern Greene track

Sophomore had a big role in lifting the T-Birds to second place at the SWIAC Meet, winning the 1,600 in 5:32.94 and taking second in the 400 (1:04.71) and the 3,200 (12:43.21). She also anchored the 3,200 relay to a win in 10:31.49.

Kaliya Dawley, Seven Oaks girls track

Freshman is a critical member of both the 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams. She broke the high school girls 100 record with a time of 13.69 and ran her best 4x400m split of the season.

Macey Crider, Edgewood girls track

Won four events and set to meet records to help the Mustangs win the Western Indiana Conference meet by 16 points over Northview. Senior took the 100 (12.66) and 200 (27.16), while winning the shot put with a meet-record 39-6. also anchored the 4×100 relay to a meet record of 50.18, which is just off the school record.

Lucah Feagans, North girls track

Posted a career best 59.98 to finally break the minute barrier to win the 400 in the North Invitational. Also won the 200 in 26.90.

Monte Kester, Edgewood boys track

Distance standout won the 1,600 in a career best 4:31.71 and the 3,200 in 9:49.79 at the Western Indiana Conference Meet to help the Mustangs take third.

Sam Lawson, Edgewood baseball

Catcher walked, stole second and scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth in a 2-1 decision over Owen Valley. Went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a stolen base, two RBIs and four runs scored in a 17-4 win over Cloverdale. Then went 2-for-4 with an RBI in an eight-inning loss to Shakamak.

Tanner Leeseberg, Seven Oaks boys track

Freshman broke both high school boys throwing records in shot put and discus and also tied the boys high jump record of 5-4 this year.

North boys volleyball

Cougars finished their first season with a winning record. Won their first sectional game in program history in five sets over Evansville Reitz, 25-10, 25-13, 14-25, 21-25, 16-14, before losing 25-23, 25-23, 12-25, 25-22 to champion Evansville Memorial in the final.

Chaz Perry, Eastern Greene baseball

Helped the T-Birds win three in a row. Went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs in a 9-8 win over Cloverdale. Tossed a two-hitter with three walks and 13 strikeouts in a 1-0 SWIAC win over North Central. Then went 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored in a 21-1 pasting of Shoals.

Carly Reed, South softball

Senior second baseman went 3-for-7 with an RBI, two stolen bases, two walks, and two runs scored. Also had five put-outs and assisted on three more in wins over Columbus North and North Daviess.

Quinn Walters, North boys track

Set a school sophomore record in the shot put with his efforts at the North Invitational. winning in 54-2. He also took second in the discus with a 161-7, just two feet off his career best.
