Two South Bend Police officers injured during May 17 arrest

SOUTH BEND — Officials say two South Bend Police officers were sent to the hospital with injuries they sustained during an arrest in northwest South Bend on Sunday, May 17.

According to a press release from SBPD, officers responded to the 1600 block of Fremont Street on Sunday around 9 p.m. on the report of a domestic disturbance. When they arrived, the release says, they met with the victim, who had a welt on the side of her head and said her brother had assaulted her.

The officers then attempted to detain the suspect, 41-year-old Steven Fox.

“As officers tried to place Fox into handcuffs, Fox suddenly turned toward officers and pulled his arm from an officer’s grasp,” SBPD says in the release. “Officers asked Fox several times to place his arm behind his back. After officers warned several times about using their tasers and Fox continued to resist, an officer deployed his taser.”

The release says Fox continued to resist and ran toward one of the officers, striking him in the vest and throwing himself into the officer, knocking the officer to the floor. Another officer pulled out her taser, SBPD says, which Fox reached for, punching the officer in the nose as she tried to grab one of his arms.

The officers were eventually able to detain Fox and put him in handcuffs, the release says. One officer suffered a broken nose and the other a dislocated finger; both were treated at the hospital.

On Monday, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office charged Fox with the following:

Fox is currently being held at the St. Joseph County Jail.
