EVANSVILLE – Two people were shot near an Evansville elementary school Monday night, police say, and the victims reportedly don’t know who shot them or why.
The incident took place just after 10:30 p.m. around the 700 block of North Garvin Street, outside Delaware Elementary School. No students would have been present at the time, and Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp. spokesman Jason Woebkenberg said there were no lingering issues with drop-off Tuesday morning.
According to a news release from Evansville Police Department spokesman Sgt. Anthony Aussieker, officers were dispatched to the area after 911 callers reported hearing multiple shots fired. Police eventually found a male victim several blocks away in the 100 block of East Missouri Street suffering from a gunshot wound to the hip.
While officials rendered aid, a report came in of a second victim who had already arrived at the hospital. That person had been shot in the chest, the release states. Neither injuries are considered life-threatening.
“Investigators responded to the hospital to speak to both victims. Both victims stated they did not knowwho had shot them, or why,” the release states. “The victim who had been shot in the chest did admit to shooting back as they were being shot at.”
Neither victim has been publicly identified. According to the release, investigators “(recovered) numerous pieces of evidence at the scene” and searched the area for surveillance cameras. Anyone with additional information can contact police at 812-436-7979.
The shootings marked the second incident to unfold near Delaware Elementary in the last week or so. Both occurred several hours after school dismissal.
On Aug. 12, officers discovered a convicted sex offender sitting on the school’s steps around 8:15 p.m. Mark Casey Owen Cook, 33, told police he had gone to the edge of the building to get out of the rain and use Delaware’s WiFi. He faces a Level 6 felony charge of unlawful entry of school property by a serious sex offender. A hearing in the case was set for Tuesday afternoon.
