Two dead, including juvenile, after shooting on northwest side of Indianapolis

A juvenile male died after officers for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department found him and another adult male shot July 12 on Indianapolis’ northwest side, police said in a news release.

Police responded to a report of a person shot around 3:55 a.m. on the 5100 block of W 38th Street. When they arrived at the scene, they saw an adult male and a juvenile male inside a car with gunshot wounds. Both were in critical condition and later died after being transported to a hospital, according to the release.

Officers are still investigating the shooting, and no additional details have been released.

City officials aim to curb youth violence

The shooting comes as police and city leadership are implementing safety initiatives aimed at countering youth violence after two teenagers were killed and five others were injured in a mass shooting hours after Fourth of July celebrations downtown.

The new initiatives include enforcing a curfew for teenagers, increasing the number of officers and surveillance downtown at night and issuing stay-away orders for people charged with violent crimes, disorderly behavior or weapons violations to keep them from Mile Square.

Meanwhile, a proposal introduced by the Indianapolis City-County Council on July 7 would change curfews for 15 to 17-year-olds from 1 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 11 p.m. to 9 p.m. for all other days. The council also floated the idea of civil penalties and parenting classes for the guardians of repeat offenders.
