Thunderstorms could impact your Indianapolis commute Monday afternoon

Parents picking up their kids Monday after the first day of school might want to pack an umbrella – the National Weather Service in Indianapolis predicts severe weather is in the forecast.

Meteorologists with NWS issued a hazardous weather outlook on Aug. 10 for central Indiana, which shows Monday could see isolated showers and thunderstorms starting after 2 p.m.

And when it’s not raining, you can expect humid, muggy conditions, said meteorologists on social media, who urged Indianapolis residents to take precautions.

The heat index on Aug. 10 could climb to 101, followed by stormy weather over the next several days.

NWS: Thunderstorms and rain possible for central Indiana Aug. 10-16

Beginning Aug. 11, forecasters warned central Indiana could see multiple rounds of severe storms through at least Wednesday.

Damaging winds and heavy rainfall are the primary threats, advised NWS.

After Aug 12, temperatures are expected to ease into the low to mid 80s, but the chance for showers and thunderstorms remains.

Monday: Isolated showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Partly sunny and hot, with a high near 91. Heat index values as high as 101. Southwest wind 7 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Monday night: Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 73. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Tuesday: Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 89 and a low around 72. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Wednesday: Isolated showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 87 with a low around 70. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Thursday: Showers likely before 8 a.m., then isolated showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny with a high near 84 with a low around 67.

Friday: A 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 81 and a low around 65.

Saturday: A 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 83 and a low around 68.

Sunday: A 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly sunny, with a high near 84.
