Monroe County Emergency Management officials will open cooling stations throughout the county Monday, Aug. 10, due to the heat advisory that’s been issued for the area by the National Weather Service.
The NWS advisory will be in effect from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday for Monroe, Vigo, Clay, Owen, Sullivan, Greene, Knox, Daviess, Martin and Lawrence counties. The NWS bulletin states that heat index values of up to 105 degrees are expected in the area, caused by high temperatures and high humidity.
The bulletin advises people to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun and check on relatives and neighbors.
In Monroe County, the cooling stations will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. People can go to the cooling stations; food, shows and areas to sleep will not be provided.

NOTE: Pets are allowed at Station 21 and 29 only. The pets must be in a kennel or carrier at all times.
