Success of IU football boosts Bloomington economy now and into future

What an incredible way to kick off 2026! The success of the Indiana University football team provided a significant boost this winter, delivering a substantial economic impact through increased sales in apparel, overnight stays, retail, food and beverage. Beyond the financial benefits to our small businesses and employees, the social impact has been profound, bringing our community, the state and people from around the country together to cheer on the Hoosiers.

On behalf of Downtown Bloomington, I would like to thank the IU administration, athletics, coaches, players, sponsors and fans for this experience.  Additionally, thank you to the city of Bloomington team for ensuring safe and clean celebrations. This is a wonderful example of the “Town and Gown” relationship at its finest. Downtown’s proximity to campus remains a key asset, and we must be committed to physically and programmatically connecting students, faculty and visitors with the downtown area.

Looking at the year ahead, I am encouraged by the continued work in the downtown district to maintain a vital, clean and safe area.  Exciting business updates include the opening of Darn Good Soup in the Chocolate Moose restaurant, the new International Art Project gallery, the completion of the Princess Theater renovation and opening of Japones in that space, and opening of Lan Ramen and Aqua Tea restaurant.  Furthermore, construction is quickly progressing on the Bloomington Convention Center, there is steady progress on the Visit Bloomington Visitors Center, and Amplify Bloomington economic development efforts in the Trades District will all strengthen the community.

While Downtown Bloomington is a high-functioning area with a strong foundation — including numerous offices, restaurants, hotels, attractions, galleries, small businesses and a vibrant live music scene — challenges remain. Coordination is essential as we work to strengthen the area during shoulder seasons and address the complex issues surrounding unhoused population.

Maintaining a strong foundation for sustainable revitalization requires cultivating partnerships, engaging community volunteers and securing the resources necessary for downtown collaboration. Thank you for your support and involvement in strengthening the community.
