A suspect in connection to a shooting at Don Juan Cantina and Grill over the weekend that injured a man was charged Thursday with three Level 5 felonies.
On May 4, the South Bend Police Department responded to a ShotSpotter notification in the 3400 block of West Sample Street around 1:15 a.m., officers and were told a man was injured in the shooting, the department said in a press release. The victim’s injuries were non-life-threatening and he was transported to the hospital, police said.

The department’s Violent Crimes Unit conducted an investigation and identified Jose Ortiz, 23, as a suspect, police said in a May 8 press release.
Ortiz, who was booked into the St. Joseph County Jail on May 7, was charged by the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s office with three Level five felonies: battery by means of a deadly weapon, criminal recklessness due to shooting a firearm into a building and possession of methamphetamine being less than five grams.
According to public court records on MyCase Indiana, an initial hearing for Ortiz has not yet been set.
