The storms in Indiana aren’t stopping just yet.
Nearly all of the Hoosier state faced some form of weather threat throughout the day on Aug. 12. And chances of a severe storm on Aug. 13 are possible, according to the National Weather Service.
Here’s a look at the all of the rain and severe weather Indiana has seen this week.
New Castle hit by flash flooding
New Castle, as well as Middletown and Knightstown, were under a flood warning on Aug. 12 after floodwaters washed out roads and caused the evacuation of homes. A shelter was also opened.
Commissioner Steve Dellinger said Henry County was probably looking at record rainfall and flooding.
“I just wish it quit raining,” Dellinger said.
How much rain fell across Indiana? A lot
The National Weather Service of Indianapolis measured precipitation that occurred between 8 a.m. Aug. 11 and 8 a.m. Aug. 12. Climate records revealed that New Castle was hit hardest with 7.23″ of rain. Greensburg had 4.61″ and Winchester was at 4.43″ during that time period.
In Indianapolis, the Indiana State Fair closed early on Aug. 12 after strong storms swept across the state.
South Bend sees power outages after severe storms
More than a thousand customers across Michiana were without power on Aug. 12 after the region was hit with severe weather the day before.
The South Bend region saw heavy rainfall and high winds, along with a tornado warning, on the afternoon of Aug. 11.
A derecho likely hit northern Indiana
Some Hoosiers experienced a derecho on Aug. 11, which is sometimes known as an “inland hurricane.” Derechos must have wind gusts of at least 58 mph and a path of damage at least 250 miles wide.
Muncie, East Central Indiana roads under water after storms
The Muncie area had torrential rains that prompted severe flooding in some areas of Muncie and most other local communities.
Portions of city streets, county roads and state highways were made impassable by the water, prompting most local government officials to urge their constituents to stay at home. Portions of some roads literally washed away, leaving gaping holes in the pavement.
Homes were also damaged by the water. City firefighters used boats to evacuate some citizens from their homes. Displaced residents and their pets were taken to a church.
