INDIANAPOLIS — Raiders safety Tristin McCollum was fined $5,722 for the hit that ended the season of Colts kicker Spencer Shrader.
McCollum slammed into Shrader’s kicking leg an instant after he planted it back on the turf, tearing the ACL and MCL in Shrader’s right knee.
Referees flagged McCollum for roughing the kicker on the play.
“We’re just really gutted for Spencer Shrader,” Colts special teams coordinator Brian Mason said. “I love the kid. I recruited him to the University of Notre Dame, so I had an interesting path with him to already have known him and his family. Obviously, he then came to us as an undrafted free agent last year, and was with us in the offseason and the start of the season, did an unbelievable job.”
Shrader leads the NFL in scoring with 53 points. Offered an opportunity to become the team’s long-term answer at the kicking position this offseason, Shrader was off to a good start, making 13 of 14 field goals and 14 of 14 extra points to start the season.
Now, he must rehabilitate the knee and focus on returning next year.
“I know with his positive attitude, with the work ethic and everything he already put in to make the improvements to be the really good kicker that he’s really turned into being, that he’ll be able to attack this rehab,” Mason said. “We look forward to getting him back when we possibly can.”
Indianapolis linebacker Joe Bachie, who was placed on injured reserve with a toe injury earlier this week, was fined $6,500 for tripping a Raiders ballcarrier on the sideline last week, the first time all season that a Colt has been fined for an on-field infraction.
