Qualifying field set for 98th annual Bloomington City Golf Tournament

Umbrellas might be keeping company with 14 golf clubs in each bag this weekend with rain in the forecast for at least part of the 98th annual City Golf Tournament’s qualifier at Cascades Golf Course.

Rain washed out the second day last year, just the second time the qualifier was shortened to one round since it was instituted in 1982.

Area golfers will be racing through 36 holes on the Quarry-Pine layout for one of the spots in the Championship flights when play begins on Saturday, June 27 at 7:30 a.m. Pairings will be redrawn for Round 2 based on first-round scores.

There are 28 in the Men’s field, 19 in the Seniors field and 24 in the Super Seniors, with the total group about the same size as last year.

The top 15 in each division will qualify for the Championship flights when match play begins on July 11-12 after skipping the Fourth of July weekend. The finals will take place July 18-19. Defending champs Jason Bannister (Men’s), Chad Osborne (Seniors) and Ike Martin (Super Seniors) may skip the qualifier as they automatically receive the No. 1 seeds.

The tournament is open to all golfers from Monroe and adjoining counties. Registration for the regular, junior and women’s flights will continue until July 1. Each golfer must play a qualifying round at Cascades by that same date. Entry fee is $25 for regular and women and free for juniors.

Bannister rolls to Medalist title

Bannister used a first-round 63 on his home course of Rolling Meadows to build an insurmountable lead last year, following up with a 71 at Cascades for a 134 and a five-shot win to make it five Medalist titles in a row.

Joe Newman won Seniors, Gary EuDaly took the Super Seniors and Kate Johnson won the Women’s title in a playoff.

Chad Stoute had the best second-round score of 68 to move up to second place in the Men’s division at 139. Nick Gillaspy (67-74—141) and Chris Williams (70-71—141) tied for third with Mitch Oard fifth (72-71—143). Brad McLaughlin (150), Logan Vernon (151), Brayden Bunger (153), Jon Bohnenkamp (154) and Jack Davis (154) rounding out the top 10.

Matt Newman (152), Daniel Melwid (153), Nick Raventos (175) and Austin Humbert (202) won the lower flights.

The Women’s title went three extra holes after Johnson and Peggy Taylor tied at 81. Ann Huntoon was third at 94.

Joe Newman won the Senior title by one shot, going 75-74 for a 149 to top Chad Osborne (77-73—150), Darren Fuller (75-78—153), first-round leader Matt Till (73-82—155) and Jim Alexander (76-81—157) followed. Jon Wampler (159), Gerald Sloan (158) and Dan Smith (183) won the lower flights.

EuDaly kept it under par both days to win the Super Seniors title at 67-69—136 by a wide margin with Rory Brown next at 73-74—147 and Gary Walls tying him at 74-73—147. Dan Neubecker (150) and Gary Snow (151) went 4-5. Ike Martin (156) and Robin Harper (165) won the lower flights while Marty Hutsell was the Master Super Senior champ at 93-83—176.

State Am, Open qualifiers

The 126th Indiana Amateur Championship field includes South grads Happy Gilmore and Nick Bellush, Bloomington’s Jacob Fritz and former Brown County standout Bailey Howard.

At the Indiana Open qualifier at The Legends in Franklin, Bannister tied for second at 70, former South standouts Connor Byon and Bellush tied for 11th at 72 to make the field, while Gilmore is on the waitlist as an alternate after shooting a 75 to tie for 30th.

The Indiana Am will take place June 29-July 1 at Broadmoor in Indianapolis. The Indiana Open Championship is July 6-8 at the Brickyard.

Junior highlights

North’s Alec Freund fired a 72 for fourth, South’s Karl Bailey had a 74 to tie for eighth and BNL’s Evan Tillett had a 75 to tie for 10th in the qualifier at Country Oaks to make the field for the Boys State Championships June 22-26 at West Lafayette.

Gady (71-82—153) tied for 24th and Bailey (74-81—155) tied for 32nd and North’s Ryan Decker (82-77—159) tied for 57th to make the cut (top 64) for match play this week.
