Davis led Lake Wales softball back to final four as Polk's top hitter

The main job of a leadoff hitter is simple. Just get on base. Keira Davis did that more than 50 percent of her plate appearances and much, much more. The senior center fielder led Lake Wales in nearly every category and had at least one hit in 25 of 32 games this season.

Numbers might not always tell the whole story, but Davis’ case, they just might. For the season, Davis led Lake Wales in batting average (.475), runs scored (37), hits (56), doubles (12) triples (5), RBIs (36), on-base percentage (.519), slugging (.737) and OPS (1.256). She was second with three home runs. She also led with 23 stolen bases and in her career, she finished with 78 stolen bases and was never caught stealing.

Davis relished the responsibility of being the leadoff hitter and thrived in big games. In the five playoff games this season, she batted .470 (8-for-17) with 3 doubles, 4 RBIs and 5 runs scored an an on-base percentage of .550. She was 3-for-7 in the state tournament and was on base 50 percent of her plate appearances.

“I did enjoy the pressure,” Davis said. “I think I do better under pressure, honestly. Having the pressure on me, I knew what I had to do, and I just did everything in my power to make it happen.”

Although she was disappointed that Lake Wales finished state runner-up, she is proud of what she was able to accomplish her senior season.

And not just her senior season. Davis was a solid hitter as a freshman when Lake Wales won the state title. She batted .312 with eight extra-base hits. She went hitless (0-for-5) in the two games of the state tournament but still walked three times against Lemon Bay in the state semifinals.

Since then, she has been one of the elite hitters in the county, getting better and better each year. She batted .440 with 16 extra-base hits as a sophomore and .462 with 17 extra-base hits, including 12 doubles, as a junior.

“I’m most proud just being able to stay consistent with my hitting throughout the years,” Davis said. “Even with all the pitchers getting better, I still stayed down and did what I had to do.”

Davis not only tough to pitch to but she’s also hard to defend as she can hit for power and bunt.

“She does hit the ball pretty far for as little as she is, but she also puts it in play,” Bartow pitcher Ryleigh Knowlton said. “And she’s fast. So if she puts it in play, most of the time she’s probably going to be safe. So it’s really just her putting the ball in play and getting down the line.”

As her numbers has show, Davis consistently improved each year.

“My coaches had a big part to play in it, just in keeping me on track and just keeping me leveled, having me work on hitting every day so I could stay in the process that I was in the previous years,” Davis said.

Davis’ softball career isn’t over. In fact, when she plays at Polk State next year ― she hopes to later transfer to a four-year school ― it will be a dream come true.

“I always had the dream to do it and I hoped I would accomplish it,” Davis said of playing college softball. “I’m glad I did. I honestly always thought I could do it and I just put in the work, and I did it.”
