A northbound semi truck pulling an anhydrous ammonia tank collided after the southbound car crossed left of center and drove into the path of the semi just south of the bridge over Wea Creek north of Romney, according to the sheriff’s department’s preliminary investigation.

The collision forced the semi off the west side of the road and into some trees, police said. The southbound car came to rest on the shoulder of U.S. 231’s southbound lanes.

The driver of the car died at the scene, according to the sheriff’s department.

The driver of the semi refused medical treatment at the scene.

He was driving a semi for a company in Fowler, according to the sheriff’s department.

The driver has not been positively identified yet, Tippecanoe County Coroner Carrie Costello said. An autopsy will be scheduled for next week.

The accident closed the highway while investigators reconstructed the accident and offloaded the anhydrous ammonia, according to the sheriff’s department. The road will be closed at least until about 6 p.m. Friday.
