The Indianapolis Colts’ competition at kicker between Spencer Shrader and Maddux Trujillo has not only taken shape at this point, but it appears to be all but over.
Following Monday’s practice, special teams coordinator Brian Mason confirmed that Spencer Shrader would receive all of the kicking opportunities in Week 2 of the preseason.
Schrader will also see most of the kicks in practices moving forward, as the team prepares him for the regular season.
Mason added that Shrader has made 87% of his kicks in training camp compared to Trujillo’s 78%.
In the preseason opener, Shrader would go 3-for-4 on field goal attempts, which included making one from over 50 yards and missing one from that range as well. Trujillo made his lone extra point attempt.
As GM Chris Ballard described during the offseason, what gave the Colts the confidence to move forward with Shrader was his ability as a rookie in 2024 to bounce around to multiple teams yet remain consistent.
With that said, he’s still an inexperienced player who doesn’t yet have a regular season attempt of 50 or more yards. But the “open competition” at kicker never quite materialized with Shrader steadily improving as the offseason went on.
“I think he’s kicking better in training camp than he was in OTAs, I think he’s kicking better in week three of training camp than he was in week one,” Mason said of Shrader, via Colts.com.
