A Belleville, Illinois, native, Newson started at UT Martin from 2003 to 2006 and was inducted into the school’s athletic Hall of Fame in 2014. The 6-foot-5 guard averaged 16.2-points per game over 83 games and finished his Skyhawks career as the program’s third all-time leading scorer with 1,347 points. He earned All-Ohio Valley Conference honors twice and posted a career-best 18.8 points per game as a senior.

After college, Newson briefly signed with the Dallas Mavericks and later played in what is now the NBA G League for the Sioux Falls Skyforce and Bakersfield Jam. He also spent several seasons overseas.

In recent years, Newson has bulit a reputation around training and development for high school, collegiate, and professional athletes. He has roles with CP3 Camps, and was most recently the director of basketball for Phantom BC in the Unrivaled Basketball League. It is there he got to gain experience working with WNBA and and made it to the championship game.

In his new role at Notre Dame, Newson is expected to focus heavily on player development and scouting. Ivey and her staff have emphasized player growth and pro preparation in recent years, and Newson’s background aligns with that vision.

The women’s basketball team finished with a 25-11 record this past season, finishing 12-6 in the ACC Conference.
