NFL analyst believes Colts rookie can 'surprise' fans in 2026

One NFL draft analyst believes that a member of the Indianapolis Colts’ 2026 NFL draft class could “surprise” fans in 2026.

Josh Edwards of CBS Sports put together his list of 10 AFC rookies who could make a surprise impact this season. Among those listed was Colts linebacker CJ Allen, whom the team selected in the second round.

“Allen has a capped ceiling and may never be one of the league’s best linebackers, but he raises the floor immensely,” wrote Edwards. “Defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo can count upon Allen to execute his assignment and clean up missed tackles on the second level.”

Allen is expected to be a Day 1 starter for the Colts at linebacker, while also wearing the green dot, which comes with a lot of responsibilities.

This defender is in charge of relaying the play-call to the rest of the defense, making sure everyone is positioned correctly pre-snap, and then has to call out any adjustments based on what the offense is doing. This is a role that Allen filled at Georgia.

Allen was named a first-team All-American following the 2025 season. He ranked among the best in run defense over both the 2024 and 2025 seasons, according to PFF’s metrics. He’s been a very sound tackler. In coverage, he allowed 10.6 yards per catch in 2025, with three pass breakups.

Allen’s impact has the potential to go beyond the stat sheet. As the MIKE linebacker, he will be vital to setting the Colts’ defense up for success pre-snap, and as Edwards mentions, his presence provides needed stability at linebacker for the Colts.
