New Indiana laws taking effect Jan. 1, from property taxes to bingo

A new year is upon us, and with it, a few new laws of the land to learn.

With Indiana’s legislative sessions taking place in the first half of every year, the vast majority of new laws take effect either right away or on July 1. But they do leave a few things for Jan. 1 ― usually measures that are nuanced or seem worthy of a ramp-up period.

They are few and far between for 2026, but a few of the key provisions happen to tie into one of the year’s most hot-button topic: property taxes.

Property tax provisions taking effect Jan. 1, 2026

At its core, Senate Enrolled Act One reduces property taxes in Indiana by increasing exemptions and deductions so that less of a property’s value is taxed. Here’s what’s starting in 2026:

State income tax will decrease

In a remnant of the 2023 budget cycle, another decrease in the state income tax is scheduled to take effect in 2026. What’s now 3% will become 2.95%, a yearly savings of $50 for someone with a $100,000 salary.

A few odds and ends

And there are a number of other unrelated provisions taking effect Jan. 1 that defy simple categorization:
