Michigan secures commitment from Jayce Brewer, offers other local recruits

The college football recruiting cycle is in the commitment stage. Here are five things to know in local recruiting:

Jayce Brewer commits to Michigan

Franklin Central junior defensive end Jayce Brewer committed to Michigan over a list of finalists that also included Indiana, Purdue, Auburn, Kentucky and Tennessee.

The 6-5, 240-pound Brewer, rated as a three-star edge rusher by 247sports, visited Michigan twice in the spring, including one to the Wolverines’ spring game.

“You are going to get player that puts his head down and works,” Brewer said on his commitment video. “I want to come in and turn the program around and get back to that winning culture and get a national championship back to Ann Arbor. That’s what you’ll be getting out of me.”

Brewer had 31 tackles, nine for a loss, 2 ½ sacks and 13 quarterback hurries as a junior. He also played some tight end, making 14 catches for 111 yards and one touchdown.

Michigan jumping in on other prospects

Following Brewer’s commitment, it will be interesting to see if the Wolverines can make headway with any other in-state recruits.

Brewer’s Franklin Central teammate, three-star defensive back D.J. Mitchell, picked up an offer from Michigan on Saturday. Which is notable because Mitchell is committed to Miami of Ohio. He was also offered by Purdue following the college showcase at Franklin Central.

Michigan also offered Lawrence Central speedster Errol Kerns III, a defensive back. Kerns has also added offers from Kentucky, Northwestern and Texas A&M after an impressive showing at his college showcase.

Izayveon Moore offered by Purdue

Lawrence North running back Izayveon Moore committed to Miami of Ohio last week but will have to do some further thinking after he picked up an offer from Purdue.

The 5-8, 180-pound Moore, who picked the RedHawks over offers from Eastern Michigan, Ohio and Toledo, has 4,083 career rushing yards and 61 rushing TDs in his three seasons at Lawrence North.

It will be interesting to see if Moore gets any other Power Four offers.

Mason Oglesby update

New Palestine tight end Mason Oglesby announced that he would no longer be taking his official visit to Texas Tech, which was set for the first weekend of June.

Oglesby has an official visit set to Ohio State at the end of May. He has already taken official visits to Purdue, North Carolina, Indiana and Kansas.

New offers

>>>Warren Central four-star linebacker Sean Fox added an offer from Texas. The 6-5, 225-pound junior has a long list of offers, but Notre Dame could be the program to watch. He plans to make an official visit to South Bend the weekend of June 12.

>>>Brebeuf Jesuit lineman Krystian Oakley has picked up several offers from the start of the month, including Bowling Green, Liberty, Ohio, Ball State and Toledo.

>>>New Palestine sophomore defensive tackle Sam Hirschy added another SEC offer from Tennessee. Hirschy already has an impressive list of offers, including Auburn, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Purdue, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech.
