Man rescued from Eagle Creek dies; was trying to retrieve boat

A 41-year-old man rescued from Eagle Creek Reservoir on the northwest side has died from his injuries, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said.

Frederick Holmes, of Indianapolis, died from injuries suffered Friday after going underwater while attempting to retrieve another person’s fishing boat that had drifted out from a dock.

The fire department responded to Eagle Creek Reservoir near Dandy Trail around noon on April 24 to a report that a man had gone underwater and had not resurfaced. Divers pulled Holmes out of the water about 30 minutes after arriving on scene.

First responders learned that a boater had tied his vessel to a dock and walked back to his truck when the boat began to drift away, according to the DNR. A bystander offered to swim out to retrieve the boat but began to struggle in the water and went under.

Holmes was transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating.
