LAFAYETTE, IN — The Tippecanoe County coroner has identified the man police shot and killed Sunday after police say he brandished a gun on Lafayette’s north end.
Police were called to the 2200 block of Stillwell Street about 12:15 a.m. Sunday for a report of an “intoxicated male pointing a firearm at another individual,” according to a news release.
The man, identified Tuesday as 66-year-old James Robert Allison, was allegedly found in the road and did not comply with multiple commands to drop the gun, Lafayette police said.
Officials would not confirm where Allison lived, but Tippecanoe County property records list him as owning a home on that block of Stillwell Street.
“The situation resulted in an officer-involved shooting,” police said. The man later died of his injuries, while no officers were injured in the incident.
A forensic autopsy identified the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds, according to a Tippecanoe County coroner’s news release issued Tuesday afternoon. Toxicology results are pending, but the preliminary manner of death was determined to be a homicide.
“The ruling of homicide merely means the death met the threshold of ‘death at the hands of another’ anddoes not refer to any possible criminal liability,” the release said. “This investigation remains ongoing by the Tippecanoe County coroner’s office.”
The officers involved in the shooting are on administrative leave, police said.
