Lake Village tornado's victims identified

LAKE VILLAGE, IN — The couple killed March 10 in a tornado that slammed into northern Newton County’s town of Lake Village were Edward Kozlowski, 89, and Arlene Kozlowski, 84, according to a news release from Newton County’s coroner.

The couple were found after the tornado passed through the town about 7:15 p.m. March 10, Newton County Sheriff Shannon Cothran said last week during a news conference.

About 10 people were injured in the twister, and others, like Steve Travis, were hurt, but not enough to go to a hospital.

“I’m banged up,” Travis said during a brief interview March 11 as he sat in a SUV. “I’m alive and breathing. That’s the name of the game.”

The tornados crossed the Indiana/Illinois border about four miles west of Lake Village and traveled in a northeast direction, according to scanner traffic and information released March 11 at a news conference.

The tornado entered Lake Village at the southwest corner of the town, destroying a gas station, a Family Dollar store, as well as dozens of homes.

The Newton County Sheriff’s Department Facebook page has been a centralized location for those affected by the tornado to find help or offer help to their neighbors.

The sheriff’s department stressed that contractors who want to help must first be approved.

In Newton County, contractors must register with the county, Cothran said. Call 888-663-9863 and follow the prompts to reach the building department to register as a contractor.
