Book club, speedy birds and gory horror all on tap this week

While Independence Day is in our collective rearview mirror, there’s still plenty of summer fun to be had around Bloomington. Here’s what’s on tap.

Thursday, July 9

On Thursday, the Monroe County Public Library will be hosting an “escape room” event, though guests aren’t trying to actually exit a room, but rather solve a series of breakout boxes. Put your logic skills to the test deciphering codes, solving puzzles and unlocking the boxes before time runs out.

The event, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Southwest Branch, is for ages 18 and over, and interested parties can register here.

Saturday, July 11

On Saturday, the branch will host Movies vs. Books Club: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte.

From 2-5 p.m., the quarterly Movies vs. Books Club will be held. Popcorn and candy will be provided during the movie.  Read Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, then join to watch the 2011 film adaptation directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga.

You can request a copy of the book be placed on hold for you when you register to attend, or read or listen to a digital copy on Libby or Hoopla.

Afterwards, they’ll tackle the question: which was better—the book or the movie? Age 18 and up. Please register here.

Also Saturday at Orbit Room, Infrathin (a project by Whitney Johnson and Lula Aslpund) will perform at 9 p.m. with doors opening at 8:30 p.m. A food or drink purchase is required.

“Lula Asplund and Whitney Johnson alchemize their protean practices in acoustic, analog, digital, and code-based sound into a new collaboration,” an event listing for the show reads. “Songs and sounds knock on the door of technology, intent on revealing the ghost in the machine.”

All ages are welcome.

Sunday, July 12

At the Downtown Library on Saturday, from 2-3 p.m., WildCare Inc. Animal Ambassador, Felix, will be on-hand to teach families about the fastest animal on earth, the Peregrine Falcon. Ages 5 and up are welcome and those interested can register here.

At the downtown branch on Sunday, from 2:30-4:30 p.m., the library will host “Unearth Your Story: Postcard Memoirs.” Local author and speaker Shana Ritter will lead participants through the process of how to start writing memoirs, asking the right questions, and finding a way to grab individual memories and link them together.

Ritter will be using the ideas of postcard memoirs—how to take a snapshot of your life and share it. Please bring a notebook and pen or laptop, and be prepared to have fun. No previous experience is necessary. Age 18 and up. Please register here.

Wednesday, July 15

Back at the Orbit Room on Wednesday, July 15, Cicada Cinema will host a fundraiser. The cinema has been dormant for a while as they build the new theater, but “thanks to some glowing green ooze and our friends at the Orbit Room, we’re coming back to life for a very special screening of Stuart Gordon’s legendary cult classic “Re-Animator” (1985),” the event listing says.

The one-night-only event is for Ages 18+ and requires a $15 donation. Showtimes are at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

“Gory, hilarious, and more than a little bit kinky, “Re-Animator” is one of the most beloved horror movies in cinema history. Based on a short story by HP Lovecraft, it follows ambitious medical student Herbert West as he attempts to cure death, one uncontrollable zombie at a time,” the listing reads. “Featuring performances by Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton that made them b-movie icons, and several unforgettably wild scenes (one memorably recapped in American Beauty), this is one movie you need to see before you die.”

Purchase your tickets at patronicity.com/cicadacinema. Suggested donation is $15, though you can always give more. All donations will help us finish construction on Cicada Cinema’s new home. Just show the receipt from your donation at the door for entry. Tickets will be limited to 25 per showing.
