LAFAYETTE, IN — A man with an alleged history of steroid use is facing a slew of charges after allegedly strangling and beating his wife with his fists and one of several guns he kept in their home.
Lafayette police were called about 5:22 a.m. to an apartment on Brunswick Drive on July 6 after a woman called to report that her husband had assaulted her, according to court documents filed Monday.
The woman told police her husband, 32-year-old Broady Bundy, had returned home the night before and the two began arguing. A short time later, the woman said Bundy placed a shotgun into his own mouth, then hit her in the leg with the gun’s barrel, creating an open wound, the affidavit said.
Bundy proceeded to punch, kick and knee the woman multiple times throughout the altercation, court records said. The woman said Bundy also slammed her head into the concrete floor multiple times.
The woman told police that during the beating, she felt she was going to black out and was unsure whether she did at any point. During the beating, the woman said Bundy placed what she believed to be a T-shirt over her mouth and throat as a means to better grip her head as he continued to pound it into the floor.
The repeated assault went on until about 2 a.m., when the woman said she was able to push Bundy off her so she could run to the door, according to the affidavit. As she attempted to flee out the front door, the woman said Bundy grabbed her and attempted to drag her away as she struggled to unlock the door.
The woman was finally able to break away, running to a neighbor’s house, where she called police. An officer witnessed the bloody bandage on her leg where she was struck by the shotgun, scratches and bruising on her face, head, neck and chest, the court documents said. Police also noted large bruises with discoloration on her legs and hip, which the woman said came from the week before when Bundy had beaten her.
Although the home had interior cameras, the woman told police that Bundy had deleted majority of the footage of him beating her, but she was able to save one video from an incident on June 30, according to court documents.
In that video taken from a camera positioned in the couple’s bedroom, Bundy suddenly hit the woman in the face unprovoked, the affidavit said. Bundy then climbed on top of the woman and hit her multiple times while the woman yelled for him to stop.
After Bundy stopped hitting her, he grabbed a nearby shotgun, climbed back onto the bed to stand over the woman and pointed the gun down at her. As the woman cried and begged him to stop, Bundy finally put the shotgun down.
The woman told police these domestic incidents happened about once a week, the affidavit said, recounting times when he threatened to kill her and chased her around their home with knives, but lately the incidents had become more frequent.
Bundy had been using steroids since before the couple met, the woman told police. She said he used syringes to inject Trenbolone, a steroid primarily used by veterinarians to promote muscle growth in cattle, and Anavar, a synthetic steroid typically prescribed to patients to help rebuild lean body mass lost to surgery or severe trauma.
When additional officers arrived on the scene the morning of July 6, police encountered Bundy leaving the apartment with a duffle bag, the affidavit said. After ordering Bundy to stop, Bundy threw the bag on the ground.
Once Bundy was arrested, police said in the affidavit he proceeded to make comments to the effect that acknowledged he’d gotten into an argument with his wife and “he knew his life was over.” Bundy said his wife did attempt to leave the house several times, but he stopped her.
When police asked Bundy whether he had a gun during the fight, he said he was unsure, according to court documents. When asked what was in the duffle bag, Bundy said there were needles and steroids in it.
In the couple’s home, police found shotguns, a rifle, a handgun, and two notes that talked of the “end of Broady’s life or the end of the recipient’s life,” court documents said. Inside one of the vehicles at the couple’s home, police allegedly found two more handguns and a rifle.
When police spoke with Bundy on July 8, he said that when he came home that evening, he began drinking to “calm himself down.” Later, he and his wife began arguing, and he recalled hitting the woman in the face “for no reason” and hitting her leg. Bundy said he recalled being on top of the woman with her arms bent down at one point but did not recall much else from the altercation.
Bundy said he recalled hitting the woman, too, during the June 30 incident recorded on their bedroom camera, but he did not recall pointing a gun at her, court documents said. Bundy said he did delete other videos from the home’s security cameras that showed altercations and admitted that the “frequency and severity” of their arguments had been increasing.
On July 7, a “red flag” motion was filed to confiscate Bundy’s gun collection, and on July 9, the order was granted, according to court documents.
Bundy is formally charged with several felony counts, including domestic battery with a deadly weapon, strangulation, criminal confinement, possession of a controlled substance, pointing a firearm, and intimidation with a deadly weapon. As of Tuesday, Bundy remains in the Tippecanoe County Jail on $5,000 cash and $50,000 surety bond.
