Kroger plans to close 60 stores over the next 18 months, and some of the stores affected have been announced.
Interim CEO Ron Sargent said during a conference call on Friday, June 20, that the unprofitable stores being closed were spread around the U.S.
“We deferred closing any stores due to the merger process,” Sargent said, referring to the aborted takeover of Albertsons. “We see this as an opportunity to move these closed store sales to other stores, and we think that should improve profitability. There’s really minimal financial impact on company results as the result of these store closures.”
Sargent noted associates are “the backbone of the company,” and that all the associates who are affected will be offered jobs in the other stores.
Kroger still plans to open 30 new stores in 2025, despite the latest store closings. Those locations have yet to be announced.
“Obviously, new store openings are the largest share of market share gains … We’ll probably favor areas of the country that are growing faster than others. We’re going to look at where we have competitive opportunities or growth within cities that we operate in. It’s really scattered around the country, and there will be a variety of store formats. The marketplace store is a terrific format, and many will be marketplace stores.”
Kroger has not yet released a complete list of stores that will be closing.

Why are Kroger stores closing individually? Is there a complete list of Kroger stores closing?
Kroger officials have not offered a complete list.
A Kroger spokesperson referenced the Peoria, Ill., store closing in an email, noting the company wanted to make sure associates heard it from the leadership team before the news became public.
“Unfortunately, we have made the difficult decision to close the Sterling store. While we are leaving this location, we will offer each impacted associate the opportunity to transfer to a new location,” the Kroger spokesperson said in an email.
“This closure is part of a larger company-wide decision to run more efficiently and ensure the long-term health of our business.”
