President Donald Trump’s decision to strike nuclear sites in Iran on June 21 drew both praise and rebuke as the United States crept further into the war between Israel and Iran.
Iran retaliated on June 23 by launching missiles at a U.S. military base in Qatar, sparking fears of further action, including on U.S. soil.
Though politicians were some of the loudest voices in the debate regarding Trump’s decision, some Jewish advocacy groups have chimed in.
The Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis posted a statement applauding the decision on June 22.
“The Jewish Federations of North America applaud the decisive and historic action taken to dismantle Iran’s key nuclear facilities, including the critical site at Fordow. We thank President Trump and the brave women and men of the United States Armed Forces for this historic action,” the statement read. “We could not be prouder to have the United States join together with the State of Israel in defense of the free world.”
Several Indiana politicians joined in thanking Trump.
Former Indiana governor Mike Pence, who most recently served as Trump’s first-term vice president, supported Trump’s strikes in a post on X, writing he should be “commended for his decisive leadership.” The Republican has not always agreed with Trump and refrained from endorsing him in 2024.
Indiana’s governor, lieutenant governor and Republican members of the state’s congressional delegation also praised Trump for his decision to strike Iran.
Democrats were more critical. In a post on X, U.S. Rep. Andre Carson called Trump’s action unconstitutional, arguing his actions required Congressional approval.
Fellow Democrat, Rep. Frank Mrvan, also criticized Trump’s lack of coordination with Congress but affirmed his support for preventing Iran from gaining nuclear capabilities.
“Let me be clear, no one believes Iran should be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon,” he wrote in a post on X.
